Newborn Clothing Essentials Checklist
Buying newborn clothes never gets old! There are many darling clothes to choose from with the softest fabrics and the cutest designs.

Exactly which clothes are necessary for a happy and comfortable baby, though?

There are lots of different clothes out there for newborns, but only a handful of newborn clothing essentials make motherhood so much easier. Babies are messy, and they need plenty of these fundamental clothes.

Bodysuits, Bodysuits, Bodysuits!

Bodysuits, Bodysuits, Bodysuits!
You can never have too many bodysuits! Sometimes called onesies, bodysuits are versatile and comfortable for a newborn. They’re easy to slip on, and they button at the bottom for easy diaper access, as is the custom for baby clothes.

They can be worn as a regular shirt, or they can be perfect as undershirts for an extra layer of warmth. These are long sleeve, short sleeve, or strapped for ultimate adaptability. Some even come with built-in mittens!

Newborns frequently spit up and have messy accidents. Having a supply of the same color onesies on hand can save any outfit.

Mittens, Hats, & Socks

Mittens, Hats, & Socks
Babies lose a lot of heat through their heads and feet. Many babies aren’t born with enough hair to compensate for cool weather conditions. Even when it’s warm outside, hats can keep the sun from harming their scalp.

Babies wear mittens so that they don't accidentally scratch their faces with their sharp fingernails. Once they get better hand-eye coordination, this won’t be much of an issue anymore. Until then, mittens are among the perfect newborn clothing essentials.

Don’t be discouraged when you lose socks; it happens to the best of us! Tiny socks are hard to keep up with, and babies don’t seem to care much for them either. Still, they are necessary to wear in cold conditions. Nobody likes cold feet, and newborns will especially require warm toes!

You can usually buy these three essentials as a set for extra convenience, and they’re relatively inexpensive. Get as many as you can to keep up with those socks and mittens that seem to grow legs and hide!

Sleepers

Sleepers
One-piece sleepers are best for a cozy baby. These serve as the perfect pajamas and can help keep your baby warm. After all, newborns sleep more than anything else!

Sleepers can be footed or non-footed, but footed sleepers can help you keep a better stock of socks. Much like bodysuits, they can also have built-in mittens, which are convenient for newborns.

They can also come with zippers, buttons, snaps, or a combination of any of these.

When your baby is a newborn, buttons make it easier to get to the diapers without taking your baby's clothes off. They help keep your baby warm, even when you need to get rid of a messy situation.

Zippers, however, are much easier to manage. It can be difficult to fasten the right snaps or buttons with a fussy baby.

Blankets & Swaddle Sacks

Blankets & Swaddle Sacks
Yes, we know blankets and swaddles aren’t necessarily clothes, but they are worn by babies just as much!

Newborns love to be swaddled and wrapped up tight in blankets. It reminds them of being in the womb and provides them with warmth and support. When blankets get kicked off during their sleep, swaddle and sleep sacks save the day and keep them confined in their cozy wrap.

Blankets are essential for many newborn care tactics other than just warmth. They can be used to prop your baby up for feeding, for example. Some of us might be ashamed to admit it, but when burp rags aren’t around, a supply of blankets can be useful for surprise spit-up cleaning.

Honorable Mention: Pants

Honorable Mention: Pants
Newborns run through lots of diapers! Therefore, a lack of pants might be more inconvenient than essential. Still, it’s worth mentioning how much more comfortable they can be with snuggly pants that will keep them warm during the long winter months!

The same can be said for sweatshirts. The nicest ones will always get messy with baby accidents, but they do a world of good for a newborn’s body heat.

Plan for Growth Stages with Various Sized Clothes

Plan for Growth Stages with Various Sized Clothes
When buying baby clothes, it’s a good idea to overestimate their size a tiny bit. Babies can grow into larger sizes, but smaller sizes can be an uncomfortable waste of money.

The guests at your baby shower (especially the experienced mothers) will likely fill you with all sizes from newborn to 12 months! It’s gratifying to have a stock of bigger clothes, but in their early stages of life, you’ll need a collection of 0-3 onesies and footies.

The more, the merrier! Remember to label your baby’s drawers or have an organized plan in place so you don’t skip outfits over time. Otherwise, you might go through your baby’s clothes one day, and they’ll still have tags on them!
